Yesterday, Santiago Nuñez, the President of Ancades—National Association of Spanish Sport Horse Breeders—visited the Purebred Spanish Horse Stud Book office (LG PRE ANCCE). He was interested in having first-hand information regarding the current situation of the EQUIGENOM Group. Accompanying him was Jose Juan Morales, President of ANCCE together with Arancha Rodriguez and Pedro J. Azor, the Stud Book Director and Assistant Director, respectively.
As both a biologist and breeder, ANCADES President Santiago Nuñez stressed the importance of genomics as it is the future of equine breeding. Likewise, it is the cornerstone behind the GO EQUIGENOM project under the leadership of ANCCE.
ANCADES is the National Association of Spanish Sport Horse Breeders. This association was founded in 2001; its key objective is to promote Spanish Sport Horses bred and born in Spain. At the same time, this Association handles the breed’s Stud Book and Breeding Program.
GO EQUIGENOM
Spearheaded by ANCCE, this project seeks to develop a medium density chip that facilitates genomic selection in equines, and more specifically, in Purebred Spanish Horses. It also seeks to identify diseases, verify parentage and detect traits of economic importance.
The information generated by each horse will be available to breeders on a fully digital platform, thus making it an extremely valuable tool when making breeding-related decisions. Moreover, it will facilitate breeding tasks, which in turn, will help understand horses’ state of health, thus providing improved control of progeny while preventing hereditary diseases.
